Terms of Service
Last updated
Between you and Pioneering, New Zealand. By downloading or using any of these tools you agree to these terms.
What you get#
Everything is free. Perch and the Anti-Blur, Sodium, Argon and Typeswap extensions are downloads of their own on the download page, with every feature, and you do not need an account to use any of them. There are no plans, no subscriptions and nothing to pay.
Nothing you have installed is ever deleted by us. If a tool stops being offered, the copy you have keeps working; it simply stops receiving updates.
Nothing here limits your rights under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. Where you are a consumer, those guarantees apply regardless of anything in this document, and we cannot contract out of them.
What these tools are for#
You may install and use the applications on machines you own or control, for personal or business use.
Every tool here works by changing what a website is allowed to observe about you. That is the product, so this section says which uses it is made for rather than only listing prohibitions — a document that names only what is forbidden leaves you guessing about everything it did not think to mention.
| Tool | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Perch | Showing one browser tab in a meeting, a demo or a support session without also showing the rest of your desktop — your other windows, your notifications, your open documents. |
| Anti-Blur | Keeping video, timers and long-running pages working while you use another window, and declining to hand a site a record of when your attention was elsewhere. |
| Argon | Not being recognised between visits by sites you have not signed in to. |
| Sodium | Refusing ads and trackers on pages you read. |
| Typeswap | Reading the web in a typeface you can actually read. |
The thread running through all of them is your own screen and your own attention. These are tools for controlling what leaves your machine about you.
Where that stops#
Two of these tools work by making a website believe something that is not true. Perch hands a site a stream that is labelled as a whole monitor and carries the dimensions of one. Anti-Blur tells a page it still has your attention when it does not.
Pointed at your own privacy, that is the entire point. Pointed at a check somebody else is relying on, it is deception, and it is not what any of this is made for.
You may not use these tools to defeat a check you agreed to be subject to, or one that someone is relying on to make a decision about you. Named concretely, because a general clause is easy to read past:
- Remote proctoring or invigilation — exams, certifications, licensing tests, or any assessment you agreed to sit under observation.
- Training or compliance courses where completion is recorded — safety training, professional development hours, and anything required by a regulator, an employer or a court.
- Monitoring you accepted as a condition of work, whether an employer's or a client's.
- Anything paid or credited by attention — ad views, watch time, engagement-based payouts.
- Evading a ban, a fraud check or an identity check by presenting as a different device or person.
Where a site, an employer or an institution has its own rule about the software you run while using their service, complying with it is your responsibility and not ours.
We cannot see how you use these, and that is deliberate
The applications carry no telemetry and no usage counters — the privacy policy commits to that, and it is not weakened here. So this section is not enforced by detection, because there is nothing watching, and with no accounts there is nothing for us to switch off either. That is stated plainly rather than left implied: a rule nobody can police is still worth writing down, because it tells you what the tool is for, and because we will not pretend to an ability we deliberately did not build.
You also may not:
- resell, sublicense or redistribute the applications, or publish them to any extension gallery. Point people to the download page instead — it is free for them too.
Availability#
The applications run on your own machine. Perch contacts us only to see whether a newer version exists, and works the same if it cannot reach us. The extensions do not contact us at all.
The website and downloads are provided as-is and without an uptime guarantee.
Liability#
The tools are provided free and "as is", without warranty of any kind. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from using them, including indirect or consequential loss. Again — this does not limit the Consumer Guarantees Act where it applies to you.
Changes to these terms#
If these terms change, the date at the top changes. If you do not accept a change, stop using the tools.
Law#
These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction.
